"It is within the parameters of their social structure for horses to go to Level Four intensity and deliver a kick to another horse when necessary. Isn’t it interesting that on any given day a horse can “lay into” another horse with full intensity, yet even under great distress, most horses never threaten us with the same level of assertiveness? 🌙 🍃 🌙 Even when I was bitten or kicked in the past, it was with nowhere like the power I see horses use on one another as a matter of course. This goes to show that when a horse does attack a person with actual inintention to harm, something has gone terribly wrong. Why, exactly, do they not harm us on a daily basis when they have every ability to? 🍃 🌙 🍃 How is it that even after being mistreated, abused, or neglected—like so many of the rescue horses I have worked with—they consistently retreat and first attempt to avoid us, only trying to drive us away as a last resort? I have come to believe that horses have in their social agreement with us a “Do no harm” clause. They must, or we couldn’t have survived with them for thousands of years. 🌙 🍃 🌙 Some people feel it is okay for us to strike horses, first because they strike each other, and second because we can never hit one as hard as another horse would kick him. But as I’ve tried to make clear in this book, horses express all kinds of subtle language before they kick or bite one another. 🍃 🌙 🍃 What leads up to the kick is their Conversation: a tail flick to show annoyance; a shift of weight that looks like a slight lean to free up a leg; or even the lifting of a foot as a more direct threat.
